Characterisation

Characterisation is very similar to Role Play.

However there is a subtle difference in that with Characterisation the actor is usually briefed so that they react in a way that is consistent with the behaviours and approaches that are associated with a Character.

With Characterisation the actor plays a developed character - a full person in their own right - and the response is therefore more likely to be unanticipated and unexpected by the participant, who may not have encountered such a character previously.

The technique can be used across all key organisational activities, and is particularly useful for rehearsing situations such as as recruitment & selection interviewing, influencing & negotiation, sales & marketing, and meeting the media. Any situation where reactions or personal characteristics are unknown is likely to be suited to this type of technique.
